MWUN Wants NIMASA, NPA To Intensify Security At Jetties
The Leadership of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has called on Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency NIMASA and Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) to intensify security operations at the nation’s jetties to reduce insecurity.
President-General, MWUN, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, who made the call while speaking with journalists on challenges facing the maritime sector, said the two Federal Government agencies need to improve the security architecture around the jetties and the seaports across the country for safety.
Adeyanju noted that the seaports and jetties are not for people who do not have any business to do, but for international shipping activities, and must be guarded and protected by security agencies.
“The two government agencies need to employ more hands to perform their responsibilities adequately,” he said.
He also enjoined the Federal Government to bring back on board ship gangway security men and tally clerks to curtail illegal activities at the ports.
“They should be reinstated so that illicit drugs, dangerous vessels and stowaways do not come into the country”, he stated.
MWUM promised to partner with National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) to rid seaports and jetties of activities of drug traffickers.
The President commended the management of the terminal operators for improving the welfare of Nigerian dockworkers engaged in their terminals
He noted that, improved Welfare of dockworkers by the operators would enhance harmonious working environment and improve production.
He appealed to dockworkers to shun act of violence in their work places and anti-social behaviours capable of causing disunity at the terminals
