Is Musa’s Super Eagles Career Fading?
Ahmed Musa will go down as one of the best players to ever represent the national team, due to what he has been able to achieve over the years.
Musa has earned 99 caps for the Super Eagles and he was part of the golden generation of players that won the 2013 African Cup of Nations for Nigeria.
He is Nigeria’s leading scorer in the history of FIFA senior world cup but recently, it is visible to even the blind that his career with the Super Eagles has fallen into sharp decline.
Musa was made team Captain since the exit of John Mikel Obi from the squad after the end of 2019 African Cup of Nations in Egypt, but with just two years into his reign, it appears that Musa is gradually losing his influence in the team and his days are numbered.
Musa’s struggle in the Super Eagles started when he left Saudi Arabian club Al Nassr unceremoniously and failed to find a new club before the transfer window closes in Europe.
He was unattached between October 2020 to March 2021 and was initially left out of the Super Eagles squad that played against Benin Republic and Lesotho by the Coach, but Nigeria Football Federation AmajuPinnick intervened and forced the coach Gernot Rohr to include him in the team.
In those two qualifying matches, Musa saw less than 10 minutes of actions, as he has fallen behind several players in the pecking order and Coach Gernot Rohr no longer sees him as one of his untouchables.
In a bid to rescue his national team future, Musa decided to join Nigeria professional football league club Kano Pillars on a temporary basis, he’s still not playing at the level his mates are playing at the moment.
The friendlies against Cameroon was another chance for Musa to prove to everyone that he’s still the main man in the Super Eagles, but he managed to start the second game and he was hauled off by the coach after an unimpressive display.
It’s true that he has been an incredible servant for the country over the years , but what he did in the past can’t keep in the team at the moment and he could be forced to early retirement, if he continues to play at a low level.
With the 2022 World Cup just a year from now, Musa has to fix his fading Super Eagles by joining good club in Europe and play regularly, if he want to be heavily involved or attend the Mundial as another journeyman.
