Group Sets Agenda For Development Of Communities
A Non-Governmental organization(NGO),Media Awareness and Justice Initiative (MAJI), has urged government at all levels to ensure that education, health, electricity, security and employment are provided the people at the rural areas.
The Project Officer, policy and Governance of the group, Mr Ikechukwu Ahaka, stated this during a press briefing organised by the group on participatory governance and prioritising community needs in project allocation as a panacea to speedy development held at the autograph plaza in Port Harcourt, recently.
Mr Ahaka stated that rural communities across the state were passionately desirous of true democratic change that will impact on the lives of the people.
According to him, improvement in the education sector, creation of employment opportunities and Electricity generation will accelerate developments at the rural areas of the state.
“All these can be achieved by dedicating at least 10% of the state’s fund to community development, provision of low – income loans, and economic support to people in the community faced with poverty to enable them start small and medium scale business,”he stated
He disclosed that these were the outcome “of our distinctive research on key community priority needs in the state across the three hundred and nineteen political wards using direct stakeholder interactions.”
Ahaka urged the people to always hold their leaders accountable ,adding that such accountability will help to alleviate urban/rural poverty, improve governance and community relations as well as achieve the wishes and aspirations of the people at all levels across the state.
