Rivers Police Comb Bushes, Creeks To Rescue NEMA Officials
The Rivers State Police Command says it has intensified efforts to secure release of four personnel of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) who were kidnapped in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of Rivers State.
The victims, a woman and three men were abducted last Wednesday while on an assignment in Abua.
Spokesman of the Command, Nnamdi Omoni who disclosed this to newsmen in Port Harcourt said already the State Commissioner of Police, Usman Balel has given marching orders to the commanders of the tactical units to relocate to the East-West Road and comb the bushes and creeks to ensure the timely release of the NEMA officials.
Omoni, a Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) said the police was closing in on the abductors as the vehicle that conveyed the NEMA officials have been rescued.
The Police image maker further said that the leadership of Police and NEMA in the state have met to find possible ways of ensuring the unconditional release of the officials.
“Yes, we have intensified efforts to ensure that they are released in record time. The Commissioner of Police has given marching orders to the commanders of the tactical units to relocate to the East-West Road and comb the bushes to ensure their timely release.
“It is unfortunate that we (Police) did not get the identities of these victims early enough. But we can confirm that they are staff of NEMA that were returning from work in Abua,” he said.
Meanwhile, the Director, Disaster Risk Reduction of NEMA, Mr. Victor Owam said the agency is doing everything to ensure that its personnel are released unhurt.
He said the development halted the National Emergency Agricultural Intervention Fund programme currently ongoing in Rivers State.
The Tide reports that relatives of the kidnapped NEMA officials held a meeting with the agency’s authority in the state last week on the way forward.
