Obuah Advocates Review Of RIWAMA Laws
Sole Administrator of Rivers State Waste Management Agency(RIWAMA) , Bro Felix Obuah, has called for review and strengthnening of sanitation laws in order to inject more efficiency in the agency.
Bro. Obuah made the call through a representative of the agency at the just concluded public hearing for State Environmental Protection and Management Bill 2019.
He observed that some parts of the new bill especially Section 5 and 30 need to be framed in such manner as to give express powers to RIWAMA to oversee matters relating to waste management and control.
He observed that the current laws on the environment does not give absolute powers to the agency, and as such creates conflict and duplication of functions.
In the same light, Abraham Goboh of RIWAMA in making his presentation pointed out that though laws establishing the agency has made it possible to manage waste, he argued that other parts need to spelt out procedures to empower it to enforce and implement state policies on waste management.
He suggested that the new bill should address shortcomings and eliminate old laws that do not reflect modern trends.
Meanwhile, a statement from RIWAMA and signed by its administrator on Thursday has declared Saturday 27th as the State monthly sanitation day.
Against this backdrop, he enjoined residents to observe the exercise by cleaning their surroundings, drains and lawns.
