No Politician Under Investigation For Vote Buying -ICPC
The new chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, Prof. Bolaji Owasanoye, has said that the Commission was not investigating anyone for vote-buying and selling or other electoral frauds allegedly committed during the last general elections.
The Commission had said before the elections that it was in partnership with the Independent National Electoral Commission to stop vote-buying and monitor politicians’ spending on campaigns and other activities towards the election.
The Commission had vowed that anyone caught buying or selling votes during the election would not go unpunished.
Speaking in Abuja during his first public outing since his assumption in office, Owasanoye said the ICPC was involved in the election and that it carried out its duties as spelt out in partnership with INEC, adding that there was no suspect in its custody for electoral fraud.
He said, “INEC entered into partnership with Civil Society Organisations and corruption fighting agencies, including the ICPC.
“I was in the situation room for the election and we did what we had to do to ensure that Nigeria had a credible election.
“There is no suspect under investigation for electoral fraud. For now, we are not investigating anyone for financial crime during the election.”
