CSOs Give Siat 14-Day Ultimatum Over Land
The Rivers State Chapter of the Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) has given a 14-day ultimatum to Siat Nigeria Limited over the land it acquired from its host communities.
Making this known yesterday to newsmen in his office in Port Harcourt, Chairman of the State Chapter of CSOs, Comrade Enefaa Georgewill, said the ultimatum was necessitated by the company’s inability to meet their responsibilities to their landlords.
He stated that since the company acquired Risonspalm from the Rivers State Government in 2011, it has not met the contractual agreement it had with the five landlord communities on which 16,000 hectares of palm trees were planted.
“Having acquired the assets of former Risonspalm, it is our belief that all issues concerning the former Rionspalm and the land owners could have been addressed by Siat Nigeria Limited because no one can acquire assets without liabilities”, he said.
He said, for more than 30 years, the former Rionspalm had failed to fulfill its responsibilities of payment of rent due to the landowners of the Nucleus Estate, Ubima.
“The former Risonspalm has refused to pay the 10 percent of the profits accruing from the projects annually to the land owners as was expressly stated on the lease agreement of 25th day of April, 2017.
All the social responsibilities agreed upon by land owners and former Risonpalm were completedly abandoned.
“Consequently, the CSOs on behalf of concerned land owners of Nucleus Estate, Ubima demand that Siat Nigeria Limited as a matter of urgency commence the process of revisiting the lease agreement with former Risonpalm reached with its land owners.
“The land owners further demanded that the company stop forthwith any community relation policy that has resulted in serious conflicts between host communities”.
Comrade Georgewill stated that if nothing was done to address the issues raised, on the expiration of the 14-day notice, “the CSOs in conjunction with land owners shall organise the mother of all protests against Siat Nigeria Limited and take further steps to protect their rights”.
