Psychologist Advocates Interpersonal Relationship To Stem Suicide
An Ilorin based psychologist, Dr Jaiyeola Philip, has called for improved interpersonal relationship, to address the increasing rate of suicide in the country.
Philip our source yesterday that so many people were depressed but not looked out for by their friends and relatives.
He said the new habit of “me and my family” as opposed to the old way of kinsmen and closeness, which existed between friends and families, had done more harm than good.
Philip added that the use of social media had also contributed to depression suffered by most people because of neglect.
“The way we used to live our lives before is different from the way it is now and it is of no good to our psychological being.
“Some neighbours in the same house or compound can go days or weeks without seeing or talking to each other, which should not be.
“Communal living goes a long way in fighting depression because constant checking up on friends and relatives will make them speak out.
“As it is now with the growing rate of suicide in the country, we should endeavour to be our brother’s keeper; stop keeping to ourselves and always check up on our loved ones,” Philip said.
He added that the social media was also not helping matters as it contributed to depression in two ways.
The psychologist said that social media draws people away from each other, making them seclude themselves. Also, the fake lifestyle portrayed by others make some fall into depression.
