Strike Looms In Aviation Sector …As Unions Give Wages Commission Ultimatum
A nation -wide strike now looms in the aviation sector, as three parent industrial unions give a two-week ultimatum to the Salaries and Wages Commission to address the issue of their conditions of service.
Speaking during a sensitisation campaign at the Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, the Chairman of Association of Nigerian Aviation Professionals (ANAPS), Jerry A.Victor who spoke on behalf of other union leaders; said the purpose of the sensitisation was to prepare the workers for the strike.
According to Comrade Victor, the Salaries and Wages Commission has refused to implement the new conditions of service for Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) workers for the past six years.
“We are sensitising the workers and the public to prepare them in case the Salaries and Wages Commission failed to implement it, we go on strike.
“ It is our right to have the new conditions of service. All the 22 airports in Nigeria are doing the same sensitisation right now.All the four zones are fully mobilised, and after the two weeks, if nothing is done, we will go on strike.
“We want the public and the federal government to take the message to the Salaries and Wages Commission. We give them two weeks to respond. If they do not respond as expected, we go on strike.
“The problem is not with the FAAN management, they have done their part, but the problem is with the Salaries and Wages Commission. They have implemented that of NCAA and NAMA,so why have they delayed that of FAAN”, Victor queried.
