Navy Impounds Vessels With Illegal Crude Oil In Rivers …Hands Over Six Suspects To EFCC
In a bid to curb economic sabotage in the country, the Navy has arrested six suspected oil thieves and handed them over to the economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for prosecution.
The navy outfit also impounded a vessel laden with 158 metric tones of crude stolen by the six suspects in Rivers State.
Addressing newsmen in Port Harcourt on Tuesday, Lt A.I. Gwaska said the suspects include the captain of the vessel.
He told newsmen that the vessel was impounded 29th November 2018 during a routine patrol by one of the navy patrol ships, NNS Ogbemana and handed over to NNS Bonny.
Gwaska said the vessel and its crew were arrested because her destination was inconsistent with what was captured in her manifest.
The command gave other reasons for the impounding of the vessel and its crew as inconsistency on the quantity of product on board as declared by the captain of the vessel.
According to him, during preliminary investigation by the command, it discovered that the vessel loaded in Lagos and was heading to NSBC terminal in Bonny, Rivers State when intercepted.
He explained that, instead of the vessel heading to Bonny, the suspects diverted the impounded vessel back to Lagos route for no reason.
Gwaska declared that this kind of distortion and inconsistency with vessel and crew destination are acts of economic sabotage against the nation.
He stated that the Nigerian Navy is capable and competent to fight the war against economic sabotage and illegal oil theft in the nation’s waterways.
