Delta Modular Refinery Arrives …Rivers Takes Delivery Of Package, April

A shipment of the modular refinery to be installed in Delta State has arrived the country while the package for Rivers State will arrive by April.
This was disclosed at the meeting presided over by the Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, at the weekend.
A statement by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Laolu Akande said the meeting was briefed on the progress of the modular refineries and that one set of modular refinery package shipment has since arrived Nigeria.
He said that after undergoing clearance by the customs, the equipment will be installed in Delta State; while another set, which is expected to arrive the country in April this year, would be installed in Rivers State.
The statement explained it was one of the highlights of the meeting of the Niger Delta Inter-Ministerial Committee called to assess progress on the implementation of President Muhammadu Buhari administration’s New Vision for Niger Delta.
He said the meeting also received reports of ongoing development projects being implemented in the region.
The statement explained that the operation of the modular refineries would include the involvement of communities where they are located.
Osinbajo said this would ensure that communities benefit directly from the refineries which would help create jobs and engage youth in the region.
It would be recalled that in December, last year, the Inter-Ministerial Committee received a report that 38 licensed privately financed greenfield and mini-modular refinery investors have so far indicated interests in the establishment of refineries in the region, with, at least, 10 of the licensed investors at an advanced stage of development.
Similarly, the NDDC reported at the meeting its progress in the implementation of its projects in the region.
The commission explained that in 2017, a total of 372 projects covering roads, bridges, electricity, water, amongst others, were completed.
The development projects include the 25.7 km Nembe-Ogbia road, which would be commissioned soon; the construction of Otueke internal roads in Ogbia LGA, Bayelsa State; Kira Dere Mogho road and bridge in Gokana LGA, Rivers State.

Kenyan Runners Dominate Berlin Marathons
Kenya made it a clean sweep at the Berlin Marathon with Sabastian Sawe winning the men’s race and Rosemary Wanjiru triumphing in the women’s.
Sawe finished in two hours, two minutes and 16 seconds to make it three wins in his first three marathons.
The 30-year-old, who was victorious at this year’s London Marathon, set a sizzling pace as he left the field behind and ran much of the race surrounded only by his pacesetters.
Japan’s Akasaki Akira came second after a powerful latter half of the race, finishing almost four minutes behind Sawe, while Ethiopia’s Chimdessa Debele followed in third.
“I did my best and I am happy for this performance,” said Sawe.
“I am so happy for this year. I felt well but you cannot change the weather. Next year will be better.”
Sawe had Kelvin Kiptum’s 2023 world record of 2:00:35 in his sights when he reached halfway in 1:00:12, but faded towards the end.
In the women’s race, Wanjiru sped away from the lead pack after 25 kilometers before finishing in 2:21:05.
Ethiopia’s Dera Dida followed three seconds behind Wanjiru, with Azmera Gebru, also of Ethiopia, coming third in 2:21:29.
Wanjiru’s time was 12 minutes slower than compatriot Ruth Chepng’etich’s world record of 2:09:56, which she set in Chicago in 2024.
