Experts Seek Action To Curb TB Menace
Following the report that there were more than 23,000 cases of tuberculosis (TB) in Rivers State with just only 10 per cent of them being diagnosed, some experts have called for urgent action to stem the increasing rate of tuberculosis in the state.
Speaking to newsmen in Port Harcourt, recently, the Director in charge of Tuberculosis and Leprosy Control in the Ministry of Health, Rivers State, Dr Kingsley Aleruchi said government has launched an enlightenment campaign to reach the over five million residents of the state, with a view to curbing the menace of the disease.
Aleruchi also called on members of the public to report cases of cough that has been on for two weeks or more to the medical doctors at any health centre close to them.
“By our definition, any cough lasting for two weeks or more should receive a question mark as to whether it is TB or not. So, cough for two weeks or longer duration should make one think about TB. But again, it does not exclude a particular segment of society that is more at risk, and for this segment, we talk of those who have their immunity compromised.
“Those who don’t have optimal immunity like HIV-affected population, so far, any cough at all should receive attention whether it is TB or not,” Aleruchi added.
Also speaking, a doctor with the World Health Organisation (WHO), Dr Michael Hossey called for the creation of more TB treatment centres in order to contain the increasing cases of TB in Rivers State.
“What we need to do is to stimulate the momentum so that this issue can be addressed. We have about 250 TB treatment centres to carter for 23,000 cases already in the state, but remember that we have a population of over five million. So, if we have 250 treatment centres, is it adequate for the population? Of course, the answer is no.
