Edo Community Cries Out Over Gully Erosion
The Afashio/Iyora Community in Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State has appealed to the state government to check the worsening gully erosion in the community.
The Chairman, Afashio Development Association, Mr Francis Izuagbe, made the appeal in an interview with newsmen last Monday.
Izuagbe said that lives and properties of members of the community were at stake if urgent steps were not taken to address the problem now.
He said that many members in the community would lose their sources of livelihood if the gully erosion was allowed to deteriorate.
“We are calling on the state government to come to our aid as our community is being threatened by gully erosion,’’ he said, adding that communal efforts had been used over the years, but to no avail.
“The erosion has been persistently managed by the Afashio community over the years.
“The gully erosion is becoming more of a threat after the heavy downpour which hit residents unexpectedly, thereby sending flood into houses.
“The gully erosion is as a result of the bad drainage channel from Afowa town hall to Afashio/Iyora, thereby creating gullies in the community.
“We are appealing to the government to take urgent steps to avoid impending calamity in our community,’’ he said.
