‘Make Nigeria’s Aviation Sector Open, Transparent’
A Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), the Safer Skies Nigeria Foundation (SSNF), has called on the Federal Government to make the aviation industry in Nigeria open and transparent.
The foundation posited that safety audits must be regular and its implementation ensured, so as to make safety in the Nigerian air space a reality.
Chairman of the group, Mr Paul Okwulehie, who stated this in a press statement made available to newsmen, noted that relative performance of commercial airlines and their safety records must be made available to the public.
He said that ministers or chief executives of aviation parastals under which any crash is recorded or occurs should not be allowed to retain their seat.
The foundation chairman explained that the group was set up to advocate for safety of Nigerian’s airspace, adding that the foundation was incorporated in furtherance of the objective of making air travels in Nigeria and around the world safer.
According to him, the families of the victims of the 2012 Dana plane crash with the families of all other previous plane crashes in Nigeria came together to form the group.
Okwulehie disclosed that the group had made a number of recommendations to the Federal and regulatory agencies on how to avoid a repeated of the Dana and other air disasters.
“We had recommended constant review of the qualification experience and competence of all pilots flying commercial aircrafts in Nigeria among several others”, he said.
