50th Anniversary: Commercial Drivers Record Low Biz
As activities lined up to mark Rivers State 50th Anniversary enters its final stage, some residents of Rivers State have said the gains of the celebration were not as expected.
Some drivers interviewed said they were expecting that there would be huge influx of visitors to the state, thereby increasing commercial activities.
Mr Okon Bassey said: “We have been sitting down here since morning and nothing is happening to drivers, unlike before, when we start work and go home with something reasonable, rather we are just here waiting and quarrelling because there is no work.
Instead of drivers to see passengers on the roads, it has been so dried wonders what is happening. Is it that the general public and visitors are being involved in the celebration like the politicians? Or is it that there is no money in the country to travel down to Rivers State for the celebration?,” Bassey queried.
Meanwhile, a group known as the Ken Saro-Wiwa Associate has advised the Rivers State Governor to set aside the 21st of every May as a work-free-day to honour the Ogoni Four that was killed as part of the Ogoni struggle for recognition of Ogoni.
The National Coordinator, Ken Saro-Wiwa Associate, Gani Tobar in an open letter to the Rivers State government as part of message to mark the Rivers State Golden Jubilee Celebration, said the slain Ogoni heroes deserve honour for having worked for the development of Rivers State.
