Police Arrest Telecom Robbery Suspect, Recover 14 Batteries
Detectives of Okporo
Police Divisional headquarters in Rivers State police command, have arrested a member of five-member armed robbery gang, Mr. Victor Sunday, allegedly specialised in stealing telecommunication mast and its accessories across the State.
Men of the Okporo Police Division who were at a stop and search duty along Eneka road recently intercepted a bus loaded with heavy powered batteries suspected to be the property of one of the telecommunication companies.
“The robbers instead of obeying police order on suspecting danger zoomed off their vehicles and the police gave them a good chase and they abandoned their vehicle,” a source said.
The Tide learnt that the police later called for reinforcement and towed the vehicle to the station where they recovered 14 heavy powered batteries that were reportedly stolen from one of the telecommunication companies along the Eneka road.
The Tide also learnt that the suspect arrested was the conductor of the vehicle that was carrying the stolen batteries.
He was said to have been arrested at the police station when he came to carry the bus after he allegedly offered to pay N40,000 bribe to police in order to secure the release of their bus.
A staff working with the communication company who pleaded anonymity said the gang broke in to the place at about 2 a.m on Sunday armed with guns and other dangerous weapons and carted away 16 batteries and other accessories.
He said he immediately reported the incident to the police who swung into action and recovered 14 out of the 16 batteries.
When contacted on phone, the State Police spokesperson, DSP Nnamdi Omoni said he would get back to our correspondent, but he never did as the time of going to the press.
However, a source at the police station said the suspect arrested was among the five occupants who allegedly beat up police check point at about 3.20 a.m. Sunday morning along Anglican Church Okporo Road, Rumudara.
According to the source, the policemen who were on a stop and search duty on that road stopped the bus and ordered them to come down for search but the robbery suspects instead of complying with the order allegedly offered them N500.00
The source further said that it was at that point that the policemen became suspicious about them.
