Angels Walk Over Doves, MaintainTop Spot
Reigning Nigeria
Women’s Professional Football League champions, Rivers Angels at the weekend walked over Capital City Doves after the Abuja-based side failed to show up for their Week 9 encounter of the Nigeria Women Football League at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium, Port Harcourt. The result ensures they consolidate their position on top of the log in their group.
After the walk over formalities were concluded, Rivers Angels head coach, Edwin Okon was discouraged with the number of walk over games in the league this season.
“I am not happy about it, I think there is a fine attached to it and the league body should carry out the fine of 500,000 Naira,”Okon lamented.
“They should ensure that these clubs pay the fines so others will not repeat the same thing. It is discouraging when teams fail to show up. So far there have been five walk over games in the Nigeria Women Football league this season.”he added
The former Falcons gaffer also believes the development discourages fans from turning out for Women League games.
“It’s not about the points but the beauty and appeal of the League. Look at people coming to watch the match and at the end of the day you hear one team is not there.
“But if NFF and the League body are serious about it, I think all clubs will sit up if these fines are enforced because, by the time you pay 500,000 Naira, you will make sure you honour your next game.” said Okon.
Consequently, the league champions were awarded three points with three goals to boot. Rivers Angels still top Group B with 20 points from 8 games.
In the meantime, players of Rivers Angels have been given 2 days to rest and resume training today as the first stanza of the league ends.
The second stanza of the NWPL will kick-off on July 30 and Angels will be away to Capital City Doves in Abuja.
