Demolition Of Illegal Structures Begins In Calabar
The Ministry of Environ
ment has commenced the demolition of illegal business structures built on green areas, open spaces and verges along major roads within Calabar Metropolis. The Commissioner for Environment, Engr. Mike Eraye, who stated this said all unauthorized business structures built on green areas within the state capital would be demolished in order to restore the aesthetic value for which the state was known.
Areas affected by the demolition exercise were Moore Road, Parliamentary Road, Goodluck Jonathan By-Pass; while the next port of call would be Bedwell Street and Calabar South
The Commissioner recalled that, notice had been served the Nigeria Automobile Technician Association, Cross River State Chapter of an impending action to sanitize Bedwell Street and to this end, all unauthorized roadside mechanics and illegal business activities operating indiscriminately along roadsides and occupying the right of way in Bedwell Street were directed to vacate areas within the stipulated deadline or be made to bear the consequences. The Commissioner emphasised that the demolition exercise would be a continuous one until Calabar Metropolis’ was absolutely sanitised and rid of shanties, and containers used for business activities on verges and open spaces. Our correspondent reports this action is sequel to previous notices earlier given out to the general public on the recovery, restoration and protection of green areas in Calabar and evacuation of all unauthorized business activities from verges and open spaces along major roads within Calabar Metropolis, particularly, IBB Way, Mary Slessor, Atekong Drive, Parliamentary Road, Calabar Road, Murtala Mohammed Highway and Etta Agbor amongst others.
