Nigeria Unable To Meet Climate Change Agreement
The Minister of Envi
ronment, Hajia Amina Mohammed, says Nigeria is yet to submit its Intended National Determined Contribution (INDC) for the new climate change agreement to be adopted in Paris.
The minister disclosed this at a news conference preparatory to the conference of parties; also known as Cop 21 scheduled to hold in Paris between November 30 and December 11.
“Nigeria to date is yet to submit its INDC. This is because there are various processes that we must go through.
“To prepare an NUDC requires an incredible amount of expertise and seriousness “what we are putting there which is intended and not legally binding has to be put together in a sensible way that will generate the partnership that we get outside to implement it.
“There are many countries who have submitted INDC’s and to be frank they are not being in best shape that they should be “the minister said.
She also said that the country was trying to do the best in that regard and called for patience as the country was serious about the Paris conference. Mohammed said that one of the expectations from the new climate change agreement to be adopted was keeping global warming at below two degrees.
“It is universal agreement aim at keeping global warming at below two degrees celsives.
“If it doesn’t keep it below that, certainly the planet will be in jeopardy for us, the planet will survive without us but we will not survive without it.
“So, below two degrees negotiation are incredibly important she said.
The Minister also said that other expectation was setting the path for a low global carbon economy, where economies grow with less emission of greenhouse gases.
