Army Warns NYSC Members Against Kidnapping
Authorities of the Nigerian
Army have cautioned members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) serving in Rivers State to be wary of kidnappers, saying that they (NYSC members) are the most vulnerable people that may be kidnapped in the state.
The army said most kidnappers operating in Rivers State are concentrating more on the abduction of serving corps members despite efforts being made by security operatives to stem the Tide of kidnapping in the state.
Commander of 2 Brigade, Port Harcourt, Brigader-General Stevenson Olabanji, who stated this during an interactive session with journalists , lamented that almost on a daily basis, NYSC officials come with complaints of abduction of corps members.
He said the criminals who target and abduct these corps members are based in the rivverine areas, just as he stressed the need for communities to cooperate with the army and other security operatives to arrest kidnappers and other criminals.
He said “the most vulnerable victims of kidnapping are corps members. I get letters of kidnap from NYSC state directors… this usually happens in the riverine areas. If care is not taken, NYSC may stop posting corps members to the state due to the activities of kidnappers”.
The commander also said investigation carried out by the army has shown that almost all the boys who engage in kidnapping belong to one cult group or the other, and that they have succeeded in sowing the seed of fear into victims to the extent that those who regain their freedom are afraid of speaking to security operatives.
