Lifeline Organisation for
Children Empowerment, a Niger Delta-based non-governmental organisation, has called for the introduction of inclusive education in Nigeria.
The Executive Director of the organisation, Ngozichukwuka Obiyo made the call during a lifeline children funfair in Port Harcourt.
She said that inclusive education would check discrimination as well as provides opportunities for children with disabilities to realize their potentials with a view to contributing positively to the development of the society.
Obiyo said that the programme was designed to integrate persons with disabilities into the society, adding that there was need for policies that would enable the disables to develop self esteem in order to overcome the challenges of life.
According to her, the lifeline children funfair was part of activities to commemorate the International Day of Persons Living with Disability, adding that the celebrations was aimed at promoting an understanding of persons with disability, encourage support for their dignity, rights, wellbeing and integration of persons with disabilities in every aspect of political, social, economic and cultural life.”
She urged the children to see themselves as special breed with creative ability and made from heaven to fulfill a special assignment on planet earth.
Also speaking, a participant of the occasion, Mr Peter Mariere, also called for policies that would fully integrate persons with disabilities into the society.
He said that a percentage both in empowerment, politics and other fields should be set aside for physically challenged persons. He said this move would give a sense of belonging in the society.
He, however, thanked the organisation for identifying with the less privileged in the society and urged other organizations to emulate it.
