Safety Expert Urges FG, NIWA’s Synergy In Wrecks Removal
The Federal Ministry of
Defence Headquarters have been called upon to liaise with the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) to remove wreckages of boats and barges that were blown-up and sunk by the Joint Task Force (JTF) on destruction of illegal bunkering activities in the Niger Delta region.
The call was made by a Marine Consultant and Safety Expert, Mr Wakama Jhozaar during a chat with The Tide Correspondent in Port Harcourt.
Jhozaar said there is need for such synergy because the wrecks are posing a great challenge for effective navigation and safety of marine operators, stressing that there were many sub-merged wrecks as some are visible during low tide while others are not.
“Any contact with such wrecks means that the investments of that person is gone and nobody is responsible and there is no one to complain to in case of any accident,” he said.
He noted that National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) would have been the agency responsible to carry out that function effectively, but their best is not enough as they do not have the necessary equipment to evacuate and execute the jobs, but it is unfortunate that the Defence Headquarters however gave out the job to private contractors that also do not have the facilities to carry out such project.
“The issue of wreck removal is capital intensive and needs the expertise, and not for job seekers that have no idea about the exercise”, Jhozaar hinted. He further disclosed that when the contract is awarded to these job seekers, they only remove the juicy parts of the wreckages for sale and leave the rest under the water.
The marine consultant further hinted that those contractors are not bothered about removing the wrecks from the waterways but only the important metals, while they leave the greater parts in the water, causing a great problem to marine operators.
He stressed the need for the Defence Headquarters to liaise with NIWA to remove the illegal bunkering barges, vessels, tug-boats and others the JTF set ablaze and sunk.
