Drogba Pays Tribute To Ivorian Players
Former Elephants’ skipper
and Ivoirian legend Didier Drogba went through a storm of emotions while watching Côte d’Ivoire claim their second continental crown in Bata on Sunday night.
The Ivoirians defeated Ghana in a penalty shootout in the final of the 2015 AFCON, with their greatest supporter witnessing the event with family and friends in London.
The Chelsea striker, who retired from international duties last summer after enjoying 106 caps for his country, was part of the sides that went all the way to the final of the African showpiece in 2006 and 2012 before falling to Egypt and Zambia respectively.
And while the 36-year old was thrilled with the outcome following the dramatic shootout, he was a bit disappointed to miss out on the historic journey.
“Disappointed not to be part of this adventure, but happy and relieved that I left at the right time to allow you to grow!!!! Make this day Your day, Your victory, and the rest will be history,” Drogba said on his Twitter account, before paying tribute to his old brother in arms, Copa Barry who proved decisive against the Black Stars.
“Boubacar Copa Barry, you made my sister-in-law scream!!! I love you my brother. Critics made you grow to become a national hero!!! After Alain Gouaméné (former Côte d’Ivoire keeper who helped the Elephants to their first AFCON success against Ghana in 1992, NDLR), Copa!!!
“Thanks for everything guy!!! Thanks!!!! Thanks!!!! Thanks!!!! Thanks!!!! Thanks!!!! Thanks!!!! AFRICA CHAMPIONS!!!!
“I am speechless!!!!!!”
