Rice: FG Embarks On Quelea Bird Control In Kano
In a bid to stemming
the tide of the effect of pests that attack cereal crops on the fields, especially rice, the federal government has approved a 50 hours aerial spray of high risk areas in Kano State under attack of quelea birds.
The flag-off ceremony of the aerial spray for the control of the trans –border pests took place at the Aminu Kano International Airport, Kano recently.
The operation which is expected to reduce the amount of money being spent by farmers employing traditional control methods was attended by the Kano State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Guwana, Ag. State Director, Federal Ministry of Agriculture of Rural Development (FMARD), Mr. Adamu Mohammad Shehu, as well as other officials of the state and federal governments.
Prior to the event, rice farmers represented by the Sariki Noma Kano State, Alhaji Yusuf Nadabo, had lamented about the challenges the birds had posed to their farm output as a result of the attacks.
The operation is set to cover six local government areas which include Garun Mallam, Kura, Bagwai, Dambata, Makoda and Warawa.
The nesting and roosting sites of the quelea birds were identified during a monitoring exercise of crops performance under the 2014 wet season GES in Kano State and government promised to take measures to stem the massive losses suffered by the cereal farmers.
