The Delta State Commis
sioner for Women Affairs, Chief Betty Efekodha, yesterday said the state would train more women to acquire vocational skills in areas of their choice.
Efekodha, who made the disclosure in an interview recently in Asaba, said the training would enable them to become self reliant.
The commissioner said that the training would last for six weeks, adding that the ministry would soon commence registration of participants for the programme.
She said the empowerment programme would cover training in soap making, catering services, tailoring, computer, hairdressing, bead making and jewellery wire work.
Efekodha said that at the end of the programme, starter packs would be given to each of the women to enable them to set up their own businesses.
“As soon as we are done with the registration, we will commence the training proper because the process is ongoing,’’ she added.
Efekodha said the training would be in two categories with the first being for those who already acquired skills but had no money to set up their businesses, while the second is for those who have no skills.
The commissioner said the ministry had women development centres across the state where women were being trained on annual basis to enable them to contribute to the welfare of their families.
According to her, one of the major responsibilities of the ministry is to train women in various skills that will equip them for their future.
Efekodha, who stressed the need for women in the state to key into the programme, noted that the training was aimed at assisting women in the state to become self-reliant.
