Discovery Air Gets AOC, Begins Flight Operation, June 9
The Nigerian Civil Avia
tion Authority (NCAA) has in Lagos granted Discovery Airline an Air Operator Certificate (AOC) to operate commercial flights within the country.
Presenting the certificate to the airline, the NCAA Acting Director General, Mr Benedict Adeyileka, said that he was comfortable with the airline during the certification period.
“With the licence, Discovery Airline has met the minimum safety requirement and its airplanes are considered safe enough to fly within Nigerian airspace,” he said.
Adeyileka called for a harmonious working environment to engender a safer sky for Nigeria, saying that the regulator was critical to the air safety just like the operators.
He said that the NCAA was ready to support airline operators in the country.
The acting director-general urged the airline’s management to always remit the five per cent tax collected on behalf of NCAA promptly.
In his address, the Chairman of the airline, Mr Babatunde Babalola, thanked the management of NCAA for their support in the success story of the airline.
“The airline will adhere to strict safety procedures because it was not easy to come out of the certification,” Babalola said.
He said that the airline would operate its maiden flight on June 9 and start operations with two Boeing 737 aircraft.
According to him, the airline will begin with flights from its operational base in Lagos to Abuja, Port Harcourt and later Uyo and Yola.
Babalola said that the airline also looked forward to operating to some countries in the Western region of Africa.
