Brazil 2014: Eagles Disappoint PH Fans
Football enthusiasts in
Port Harcourt, Rivers State, have expressed disappointment over Super Eagles’ Barren draw with Iran in Group F Opener in the on-going FIFA World Cup in Brazil, last Monday.
Some of the fans, who spoke in exclusive interview with Tidessport at a viewing centre in Diobu area of Port Harcourt metropolis, Monday night blamed Eagles failure on lack of effective and efficient strikers to put the ball behind their opponent’s net.
Others were of the view that there was no connection between the midfield and strikers thereby making it impossible for Nigeria to register a goal.
A building material dealer, Mr Chika Okenwa, said that there was no player to bring the ball in 18 yard box of their opponent during the game.
Expressing disappointment, over the draw, Okenwa noted that the development was an eye opener for Super Eagles handlers to go back and plan well ahead of the two remaining group matches.
A youth activist, Ndubuisi Nwosu, said that Eagles players were tactifully deficient in the 18 yard box of the Iranians adding that there was nobody to bridge the gaps between the midfield and strikers during the game.
A timber doctor who is also a Chelsea fan in Port Harcourt, Chime Nwankwo, expressed optimism that there is hope for Super Eagles qualifications in the group stage.
According to him, Nigeria is capable of beating Bosina in their next Group F game while a draw with Argentina would make Eagles to qualify.
“They should also play cautiously to avoid incessant booking”, Nwankwo said.
Another soccer lover, Bassey Brown, however, said Eagles remained resolute in ensuring a successful tournament in spite of the goalless draw with Iran while cautioning Nigerians to stop criticising the team.
He said that Eagles had a history of not doing well in the starting of a torunament adding that recent African Cup of Nations is an example of such experience.
