The Inspector General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, yesterday ordered a cordon of the Federal Capital Territory, including Abuja city and its satellite towns, ahead of the World Economic Forum for Africa.
The order, according to a statement yesterday by the Force Public Relations Officer, Frank Mba, is in line with the directives of President Goodluck Jonathan.
The order by Abubakar, according to Mba, was with immediate effect.
Mba said in the statement: “In a detailed Operational Order released yesterday morning, at the Force Headquarters Abuja, the IGP ordered the immediate deployment of men and relevant security equipment to Abuja and the satellite towns around it so as to ensure a safe, secure and conducive atmosphere before, during and after the World Economic Forum.”
Abubakar was said to have directed Police field commanders to step up tight security measures in all strategic locations and vulnerable points and further strengthen security at entry and exit points of the FCT, airport and highways as well as city roads, hotels and the conference venue.
Abubakar sought the cooperation of all Nigerians towards Nigeria’s successful hosting of the WEF for Africa.
He promised participants in the conference, all Nigerians and the international community of adequate security, stressing that the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies have already put in place effective security measures for their safety and comfort.
Mba added in the statement on Sunday: “The IGP further charged the citizens to show understanding and continue to cooperate with the Police and all security agencies in the ongoing special security operations.”
