Editor Charges Pupils On Reading Culture
The Deputy News Editor
of the Rivers State Newspaper Corporation (RSNC), publishers of The Tide Group of Newspapers, Dr Alpheaus Paul-Worika, has urged schools to encourage the reading of newspapers to expand their scope of learning.
Paul-Worika, who gave the charge during an excursion tour by pupils of Spring-Field Primary School last Thursday, said that the reason for the visit was to expose the pupils to the practical aspect of what they had been taught in school.
The deputy news editor further explained that, The Tide is published to inform, educate, and entertain the people, adding that when you read a newspaper, you are being informed and sensitized about various activities.
Earlier, Head Teacher of the school, Mr Okechukwu Amadi, said the essence of the visit was to enable the pupils see the process of newspaper production adding that the experience would help the pupils learn more.
According to the head teacher, “The children don’t know how newspapers are made, though they have been taught but they were brought to be taught the practical aspect of the production of newspaper as the children feel newspapers are meant for adults only”.
He opined that the pupils feel that newspapers are brought from Abuja and Lagos State to Port Harcourt adding that the school management decided to take the students to see things for themselves and correct the wrong perceptions that newspapers are brought from Abuja and Lagos State.
