Bayelsa Insists On Demolition Of Illegal Structures
The Bayelsa State
Government says there is no going back on the demolition of “illegal structures’’ in Yenagoa, the state capital.
The Commissioner for Capital Development, Mr Zuwa Konugah, told newsmen that the ongoing demolition was to pave for sustainable development.
According to him, the exercise will help the state government in its bid to execute the capital city master plan.
“This administration will not allow indiscriminate erection of buildings in the streets and roads.
“The demolition will be a continuous exercise to ensure compliance by residents.
“Henceforth, no structure without approval will be allowed in the city,’’ Konugah said.
“The state government is building standard roads … we can only contribute our own quota by supporting government policies to move the state forward.”
Mr Iboro Idaba, Executive Secretary, Capital City Development Authority (CCDA), said the state government was committed to enforcing the master plan for the state capital.
Idaba said CCDA had mounted mass enlightenment among the people on the need for a befitting capital.
Reacting to this development, a resident, Mrs Ebikabore Jacob, told our correspondent that the demolition exercise would cause untold hardship to the people.
“We need more buildings, demolishing the existing houses will not help us. We want the government to provide a place for us to live,” she said.
A landlord, Mr Clement Agada, urged the government to address housing deficit in the state.
