hoS Cautions Workers Against Truancy
The Rivers State Head of
Service (HOS), Barr Samuel LongJohn has again advised civil servants in the state against truancy and unethical attitude to work or face appropriate disciplinary action.
Barr LongJohn gave the advice in Port Harcourt while undertaking a routine inspection of offices and premises of the State Secretariat.
According to him, late-coming, absenteeism and malingering are acts of gross misconduct under the Civil Service Rules and Regulations and urged civil servants involved in such acts to turn a new leaf or face the consequences.
Barr LongJohn, who paid an unscheduled visit to the Ministry of Environment and the Establishment, Training and Pensions Bureau, observed with disgust that as at 8.42 am, only 22 out of 82 staff of the Ministry of Environment had reported for work while only 8 out of 18 staff in one of the attendance registers in the Establishment Bureau had reported for work as at 8.45 am.
He therefore directed the Permanent Secretaries in charge of the MDAs to issue queries to the culprits so as to serve as a deterrent to others.
The Head of Service consequently enjoined Permanent Secretaries in all Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) to regularly monitor the attendance registers in order to ensure punctual and regular attendance to work and mete out appropriate punishment to culprits.
Barr LongJohn also inspected the complex to ascertain the state of facilities, infrastructure and cleanliness, including the site for the construction of a toilet facility to serve workers and visitors within the premises of the Civil Service Commission, Christian Pilgrims Welfare Board and the Point Block.
He also directed service providers in the premises to provide waste bins for their customers to guard against littering as well as de-silting of drainages and the placement of slabs on manholes that portend danger to workers and visitors.
