Former VC Hails Elechi Amadi’s Literary Prowess
The Chairman, Rivers
State Economic Advisory Council, Professor Emeritus Nimi Briggs has lauded the writing prowess of Dr Elechi Amadi.
The professor who was the chairman during the public presentation of the book titled, ‘When God Came’ by Dr Elechi Amadi at Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt acknowledged the playwright as not only one of Africa’s finest writers but also a writer who has made his mark globally.
“If you went anywhere and you saw a bunch of people and you asked them, do you know who Elechi Amadi is? ‘I presume they will jump to reply in the affirmative, ‘those who do so will confirm that he is a well-known playwright not just in Nigeria but also in the global literary firmament”, he said .
The chairman noted that the books; Concubine, The Great Ponds among others written by Dr Amadi do not credit him as a holder of degrees in Mathematics and Physics but the present book,’ When God Came’ does.
“And for the first time, the book ‘when God Came’, a science fiction is bringing Elechi Amadi back to his ancestral and academic foot”.
He identified writers the world over as having the same characteristics as people who can impose their own atmosphere on their readers and called all to emulate the good virtue.
The author of the book who is presently the chairman, Rivers State Scholarship Board, in his address attributed his writing skills to good reading culture and advised the youth to read widely.
Amadi who regretted that science fiction was scarce in Africa explained that science fiction had the ability to share entertainment among the populace as well as spark-off interest in science.
