Akpabio Presents N70bn Supplementary Budget
Governor Godswill
Akpabio of Akwa Ibom last Thursday presented a supplementary budget of N70 billion to the State House of Assembly for approval.
The Clerk of the House, Mrs Mandu Umoren, presented the budget to the legislators at a plenary session in Uyo.
The N70 billion supplementary budget is for capital expenditures to enable the state government complete all the ongoing projects.
The governor appealed to the legislators to expedite action on the passage of the supplementary estimates as submitted.
The state assembly, had earlier, passed a budget of N351.29 billion for the year 2013.
The house at the plenary passed a resolution urging the governor to direct all security agencies in the state to curb activities of sea pirates in Akwa Ibom waterways.
The legislators also urged the ministry of defence, as a matter of urgency, to provide gun boats and other weapon to the Naval Base at Ikot Abasi for maximum protection of the coastal areas.
This was sequel to a matter of urgent public importance brought to the house by a member, representing Ibeno/Esit Eket State Constituency, Mr Okpolupum Ette.
Ette said that sea pirates, had in the last two months, hindered fishermen and boat operators from carrying out their legitimate activities.
He said that in the past two months, sea pirates had disturbed Akwa Ibom people living within the coastal areas.
The lawmaker said that the pirates, in most cases, seized their boats, removed engines, collected their monies and sometimes killed the people in the process.
The Speaker of the House, Mr Samuel Ikon, said that the activities of the pirates had affected the economic activities of the state.
Ikon directed the Clerk of the House to send a copy of the resolution within 48 hours to the governor for action.
