FOC Seeks Public Awareness On Floods
The Flag Officer Commanding (FOC), Central Naval Command, Yenegoa, Rear Adm. Sidi-Ali Usman, on Wednesday stressed the need to adopt pragmatic public awareness strategies in efforts to combat flood disasters across the country.
He made the observation in Warri, while speaking at a health awareness seminar on “Health Hazards of Flooding”, organised by the Central Naval Command for officers of the Warri Naval Base.
Usman, who was represented by Commodore Andrew Ode, said that the seminar was organised to intimate the officers and ratings of the Nigerian Navy on the danger and prevention of flood.
He said that at the end of the workshop, the officers and ratings would be better equipped with the basics of how to effectively manage flooding.
In her presentation, a Consultant in Public Health at Delta State University Teaching Hospital (DESUTH), Dr Rebecca Ibekwe, said that flooding was usually caused by the overflow water into dry land, causing its inundation by floodwaters.
She said that flooding could be caused by human and natural factors.
Ibekwe, who underscored the wisdom in adopting flood mitigation measures such as clearance of waterways, stressed that the people should also desist from building structures on water channels and in flood prone areas.
She urged relevant agencies to always strive to respond quickly to flood disasters in order to save the people’s lives and properties.
Also speaking, a Consultant to the Delta Ministry of Environment, Mr Anthony Futughe, said that the occurrence of floods was one of the features of nature.
He, underscored the need to adopt structural and precautionary measures to mitigate the incidence of floods stating that such measures should be primarily directed at promoting human health safety.
