Body Donates 5,000 Books To PHALGA
A body known as Iwhuruoha Read Organisation (IRO) has donated a total of 5,000 books in different areas of human interest to the Port Harcourt Local Government Area, to stimulate reading culture among the youths and develop their capacity for leadership.
Presenting the books, which includes, fictions, and topical books in the arts and science, to the Mayor of Port Harcourt, Hon Chimbiko Akarolor, the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Organisation, Aso Chibuzor Teddy, said the initiative was intended to make youths imbibe the culture of reading and drop the prevalent apathy which led to increase in crime among youths.
He said the orgaisation was committed to ensuring that youths in Ikwerre speaking LGAs, are provided with reading materials to boost their intellectual potentials, pointing out that Port Harcourt City was a flagship for the exercise. He called on well meaning individuals and multinationals to contribute to the reading culture in the society. In this remark, the Mayor of Port Harcourt, Hon Chimbiko Akarolor, thanked the organisation for their initiative and emphasized the need to sustain reading culture in the society.
The Mayor also commended the effort of the Rivers State Government in promoting Read Culture, a feat he said has earned Port Harcourt, the hosting right as the World Book Capital for 2014.
The Mayor also assured the readiness of Phalga to complement the efforts of the Rivers State Government through the provision of educational aids and good library facilities in the area.
He also promised to ensure that the books provided are put into optional use.
