EDSIEC Conducts LG Polls, ’Morrow
The Edo State Independent Electoral Commission (EDSIEC) said it rescheduled the April 20 local government elections in two council areas for logistic reasons. The election will hold tomorrow, April 25.
The commission’s Public Relations Officer, Miss Osaretin Uwagboe, who made this known in an interview in Benin, said the exercise was rescheduled in Oredo and Ikpoba-okha local government areas following the inability of the contractor to complete numbering of sensitive materials.
In a related development, some voters at the Saturday’s poll have described the presence of security personnel at the various polling units across the state as impressive.
In Edo South and Edo Central Senatorial Districts, security personnel, comprising the Police, Immigration, NSCDC and FRSC, arrived at polling units as early as 7.30 am.
Some of the personnel, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said they were only assigned to maintain peace at the polling stations.
A voter, Mr Peter Okoro, said at Asoro Primary School Ward 4 that “we are impressed with the security personnel deployed to the unit. Although materials have not come and only few people turned out, their presence is good for peace.’’
Although the level of compliance of the restriction of movement was high, police mounted road blocks in strategic areas in Benin and Fugar.
