RSG Begins Fire Safety Campaign
The Rivers State Ministry of Special Duties has commenced the Fire Safety Campaign aimed at creating safety consciousness among residents of the state so as to safeguard their lives and property from fire outbreak.
Declaring the campaign with the theme, “Fire kills, Stop it” open in Port- Harcourt, Special Duties Commissioner, Barr Dickson Umunakwe, explained that the move became necessary to curb the rate of fire occurrences in the state, which he maintained can be avoided if precautionary measures are imbibed by people.
Barr Umunakwe reiterated the ministry commitment to ensuring an enabling environment for business operators as well as investors particularly in the areas of fire safety management in the state, and called on residents to shun careless acts capable of endangering their lives.
In his words, “stop the storage of petroleum products in your house, switch off electrical appliances after use, do not over load their sockets, stop the burning of refuse within residential areas, place your gas cylinders outside your kitchen, do not scoop fuel from a fallen tanker…., when we put into practice some of these safety guidance there will be no fire incident”, he added.
The special duties boss said the ministry would also employ all available medium to pass across its fire safety message including the use of jingles in radio and television, newspapers, billboards at strategy points within Port-Harcourt metropolis, adding that it would also carry the campaign to schools, market places, among others.
He called on the media practitioners in the state to join forces with its fire campaign effort to achieve set objectives.
Motorists on their part, Barr Umunakwe said should always give the right of way for fire trucks for smooth emergency rescue operations and warned against the indiscriminate vandalisation of fire trucks and attack of the ministry fire-fighters, noting that such act would no longer be condoned.
