Gov Urges FG To Increase Agric Funding
Sokoto State Governor, Aliyu Wamakko, has urged the Federal Government to channel a large chunk of the fuel subsidy funds to agriculture. He made the appeal last Friday in Sokoto when he received the Minister of Water Resources, Mrs Sarah Ochekpe, who paid him a courtesy call.
Wamakko expressed displeasure that government was still importing food, and appealed to the Federal Government to “ invest all the subsidy money or 80 per cent of it into agriculture.
“It is really shameful that in the 21st century we are still importing food in this country with all the major dams, FADAMA projects, friendly water, land and favourable weather.
“Unless we are truly able to feed the nation, all other plans will just be a dream.’’
The governor noted that smaller countries with harsh weather conditions, such as Israel, were able to conquer nature and produced food for domestic consumption and export.
“It is very sad, we must wake up and do more because we have spoken so much but I think it is now time that we begin to act,’’ the governor said.
He, however, expressed confidence in the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan through the Agricultural Transformation Agenda Programme to tackle food insecurity in the country.
