Demolition Hammer Falls In Amadi-Ama Area
In a bid to transform Port Harcourt and make it return to its garden city status, the demolition hammer of the Rivers State Ministry of Urban Development and Physical Planning has fallen on the Amadi-Ama/Abuloma area of Port Harcourt.
The operation which was carried out last Thursday by the Ministry, was supervised by the commissioner, Dr. Tammy Danagogo in company of some directors and key officials in the Ministry.
Also involved in the operation were some security operatives, especially men of the Mobile Police force who were armed, and other ministry staff who were involved in the real demolition of shantees, and other illegal structure that tended to destroy the beauty of the environment.
The Tide observed that it took barely minutes for shanties around the Amadi-Ama/Abuloma roundabout to go down, as the Ministry’s operatives swiftly brought down the structures with their tools.
Some of the illegal occupants who do business in the structures were seen scampering to secure some of their properties as the operation took them by surprise.
The urban development Commissioner said the illegal occupants of the area have been given over one year notice, and that government cannot allow the growing ugly trend and nuisance in the area to continue unabated.
The Commissioner noted that the erection of all sorts of structures and the activities of the petty traders who display their wares at the roadsides have been responsible for the massive traffic long-jam in the areas which made the people to suffer.
