Delta Promises More Projects For Communities
The Delta State Government has promised to site more projects in communities which support the execution or maintenance of existing ones.
The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Prof. Patrick Muoboghare said government was often delighted when communities, through self-help, contributed to the development of infrastructure.
The commissioner spoke at Asaba-Ase in Ndokwa East Local Government Area, which funded the re-roofing of two blocks of classrooms in the secondary school in the community.
“This type of self-help delights government.
“What Asaba-Ase community has done by re-roofing these classrooms on its own is very commendable and it will encourage the government to do more for the community by siting more projects and providing it more incentives,” he said.
The commissioner urged other communities to emulate Asaba-Ase, saying the government alone could not develop the state.
He said governance was a collective endeavour involving the support of individuals, organisations and communities.
Muoboghare, who was on an unscheduled inspection visit to the school, said the effort was a demonstration of community spirit and love among the people.
“Government has a deliberate policy that any community which supports a project located in it, in execution, maintenance or protection, will enjoy more government presence.
“It is intended to reward communities that are united and enterprising and to also encourage others to emulate them, ‘ ‘he said.
While inspecting ongoing renovation of a block of six classrooms in the school, he frowned at the slow pace of work and charged the contractor to expedite action and complete the job without further delay.
The commissioner was shocked to hear that the school had only three teachers but commended them for their dedication to duty, especially working in a rural coastal community.
The commissioner promised that more teachers would be posted to the school before the middle of the year and urged the students to remain disciplined and show seriousness in their academic work.
