Nigeria Qualifies For Women Table Tennis: 2012 Olympics
The Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF) has said that Nigeria has qualified for the women’s team event of the London 2012 Olympic Games after coming second in their group at the team’s World Cup in Germany.
Australia, Venezuela and Canada were in the same group with Nigeria. Nigeria won two of their matches, 3-2 against Canada, 3-0 against Venezuela and lost to Australia 3-0 in the quarterfinals.
Nasiru Bello, the head coach of NTTF, told reporters that the team qualified because they participated in the tournament which was used to add more points to those of the players.
“Our participation in the tournament and coming second in our group has enabled us to gain more points to those got from the 10th All Africa Games in Mozambique in September,” he said.
“This should remind us of the many reasons why we should strive to attend continental and international events not for winning alone but to increase our ranking in the world,” he said.
Nigeria dispatched five players and three officials for the competition which started on November 2 and will end on November 6.
