Ex-Legislator Harps On Value Change
A former legislator in the Delta House of Assembly, Hon Efe Afe, says no amount of legislation can uplift the standard of education without a corresponding societal value change.
Afe, who was reacting to the mass failure in the West African Examination Council (WAEC) this year, told newsmen in Effurun, Delta, that stakeholders in education had important roles to play to resuscitate the sector.
“Achieving high standard in education is not really with legislation. We have the best laws in this country and I always tell my colleagues that no matter the legislation you make, what matters has to do with individuals.
“Students are no longer serious with their studies, while parents continue to influence examiners and even encourage malpractice.
“When the system discourages it and the students have not read, what happens? There’s bound to be failure. In fact, that’s what we have just recorded in the last two WAEC examinations.”
He stressed the need for students to be serious with their studies and warned some private schools that indulged in examination malpractice to stop.
Afe remarked that the country should go back to the drawing board, not necessarily handing over schools to the missionaries but imbibing their attributes to save education.
