Chairman Urges Youths On Golf Tournaments
The chairman of the organising committee of the 20th Amateur Port Harcourt Open Golf Championship 2011, Abiye Amachree has advised youths of the state to participate in the championship.
Amachree gave the advice while fielding questions from sports journalists shortly after the closing ceremony of the championship at the weekend, Port Harcourt.
According to him, golf is one of the most interesting sports you can think of because the sports is a character moulder.
“I encourage families to enroll in golf, because it is a game that moulds character and fosters friendship,” Amachree said.
The chairman also stated that henceforth winners of any tournament would be given trophy alone, saying that this is to check corruption in the system.
“As character moulders and to avoid corruption in the system, we the committee members, deemed it necessary to revert to our tradition, by giving out only trophies and golf related items to winners” he stated.
Amachree, explained that golf is like other sports that can be played by any category of persons in the society.
“I don’t believe that golf is for the rich alone, it is just a matter of priority.
You don’t need to start golf with a new brand kit, you can buy fairly used ones”, he said.
He used the opportunity to appeal to private organisations to sponsor their professional players to attend international tournaments.
