Checking Carnage On Our Roads
Road accidents are perennial problems in Nigeria. They occur almost on daily basis in the country without any sign of abating. This is very unfortunate. Those who drive on our roads should, therefore be very careful so that lives are not lost unnecessarily. Lives lost to road accidents can never be regained.
According to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), road accidents claimed 21,090 lives from 35,300 cases of road accidents between 2007 and 2010 in the country. Disclosing this in Sokoto recently, the FRSC’s Zonal Commanding Officer, Mr. Bulus Darwang said Nigeria was one of the unsafe countries in the world in road transport. Also speaking on the issue recently, the Sokoto State Governor, Alhaji Aliyu Wamakko said the phenomenal increase in vehicular number in Nigeria had led to corresponding increase in road traffic accidents. He stressed the need for government to put necessary measures in place to ensure the safety of lives and properties on our roads.
I want to align myself with Governor Wamakko’s position. Governments in Nigeria should make every effort to put our roads in good condition so that the country would experience a reduction in the accident rate that had claimed many lives. No person will see Nigeria as safe when human beings lose their lives on daily basis to road accidents as a result of poor condition of our roads. Governments at all levels should, therefore, match their words of giving us zero pot-holes on our roads with action, so that Nigerians and foreigners living in our midst will feel safe while traveling on our roads and highways.
The daily occurrence of road accidents is becoming alarming in this country. For instance, on Thursday, September 16, 2011, thirty-two persons were killed in a road accident that occurred in Rimaye village in Kankia Local Government Area of Katsina State. According to reports, the accident happened when a Volkswagen golf car and J5 bus coming in opposite direction ran into each other, thus resulting in an inferno that consumed the two vehicles, leaving 32 persons dead and several others injured.
Also recently, the Senate President, David Mark was reported to have narrowly escaped death on Sunday, September 25, 2011, when a heavy-duty truck rammed into his convoy at Otukpo, Benue State. One of his drivers was reported killed, while two others were injured.
Not long ago too, twenty-one persons, including six male adults, eight women and seven children reportedly died in a road accident that involved a commercial bus and a truck.
According to reports, the commercial bus was travelling towards Benue State while the truck was heading to Lagos when the collision occurred three kilometers away from the main gate of the Federal University of Technology Akure. Investigation revealed that the accident was as a result of carelessness on the part of the truck driver who lost control.
These are pathetic cases of accidents that should touch the heart of well-meaning Nigerians. It is high time we stopped this carnage on our roads. People should always drive with care whenever they are on the steering. We should all realise that the lives that were lost in these accidents cannot be regained. Their useful contributions to the nation have also been denied the country.
Nevertheless, road accidents are generally caused by bad roads, reckless driving, emotional instability, drunkenness, lack of concentration, lack of training and inadequate experience on the part of the drivers.
To check frequent cases of road accidents therefore, all the above causes should be avoided. The authorities in the country should ensure that drivers have the necessary training and experience before driving innocent citizens. Our roads should also be put in good order at all times so that potholes will not be causing road accidents.
