RSG Spends N11bn On Monorail Project
The Monorail project
which has so far cost the State Government N11 billion is to be powered by independent power supply.
Commissioner for Transport, Hon. George Tolofari who stated this at the Monorail Warehouse in Trans-Amadi, Port Harcourt assured Rivers people that the epileptic power supply would not affect the project.
Hon. Tolofari, allayed the fears of those who feel that the monorail would result in the demolition of their houses, explaining that government has done a survey of the routes and discovered that only few houses would be affected while adequate compensation would be paid for such houses.
He added that only a few houses were affected by the monorail project at Azikiwe Road, pointing out that the fear of massive demolition as a result of the project is unnecessary.
He assured Rivers people that the first phase of the Rivers monorail project would be completed before December next year, and that the tracks and other equipment for the project have arrived Port Harcourt.
The commissioner stated that as soon as the equipment were cleared by the customs, it would be transferred to an already built warehouse located in Trans-Amadi Port Harcourt.
He declared, “The arrival of these equipment is an evidence that the monorail is not an abandoned project as speculated by people”.
According to him, the trains which are being built in Switzerland would arrive in Nigeria soon and appealed to Rivers people to be patient with the government.
He attributed part of the delay in the early completion of the project to the heavy rains in the state.
