Police Set Up TaskForce On Extortion
The Police Command in Bayelsa State has set up a team of detectives to arrest officers and men of the command extorting money from motorists.
Our correspondent reports that the move was widely celebrated by residents of Yenagoa and commercial motorcyclists, popularly known as ‘Okada riders’..
The Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), in the State, Mr. Eguevon Emokpae told our correspondent in Yenagoa that the command was out to rid the force of bad eggs, stressing that its objective would be achieved.
“What we are doing is to arrest those policemen who are collecting money from motorists and other road users.”
“It is against the integrity of theprofession and we will no longer condone the corrupt practice among our men,” he said.
According to Emokpae, the exercise is aimed at redeeming the image of the police in the public.
”We are not removing police from the roads as many people are thinking.”
We want to instil discipline in our men so that the public will be proud of the police,’’ he said.
Many residents of Yenagoa, especially the popular okada riders have commended the Commissioner of Police, Mr Aliyu Musa for the initiative.
A commercial motorcyclist, Mr Obi Umunna, told our correspondent that the command’s crackdown on corrupt officers was a welcome development, noting that it would go a long to redeem the image of the force.
“It is worthy of celebration, because we, the okada riders have suffered in the hands of the policemen on the road.
“We settle the police with almost three quarters of our daily earnings.”
“For each road we ply, we must settle them as they are everywhere collecting between N50 and N100,” he said.”
The command had come under public criticism in recent times over cases of extortion and brutality by men of the special anti-crime unit, codenamed “Operation Famous Tangbei.
