Group Sues For Peace In Niger Delta
A youth group, the Niger Delta Ethnic Coalition, has called on other pressure groups in the region to promote peace by supporting government initiatives.
In a letter to the presidency, the coalition expressed displeasure over the activities of some groups aimed at discrediting the leadership of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
The letter, which was signed by its National Coordinator, Mr Edisemi Yiki, was made available to newsmen in Abuja on Friday.
In the letter, the group alleged that there were external interferences in the management of NDDC by some unpatriotic elements.
The group alleged further that there were moves by some unpatriotic groups in the region to distract the management of the NDDC.
It said this was evident by their “continuous petitions and threats against some staff of the NDDC, including its Managing Director, Mr Chibuzor Ugwuoha.’’
“As the youth and people of the Niger Delta, we will not allow ourselves to be used by self serving contractors and politicians,” the letter quoted the group as saying.
It urged the security agencies in the region to take keen interest in the activities of some groups in the region to sustain peace.
The group also expressed its desire as a group to sustain and improve on the peace in the Niger Delta region.
“We want to emphasise that we will resist any disruption of the peace we are currently enjoying in the Niger Delta,’’ it quoted the group as saying.
