Edo Residents Laud Oshiomhole Over Sanitation Exercise
Governor Adams Oshiomhole of Edo has been commended for re-introducing the monthly environmental clean-up exercise in the state.
Those who praised the governor for re-introducing the exercise, however stressed the need for adequate vehicles to be provided for refuse evacuation.
Oshiomhole did not officially ban the sanitation exercise, when he assumed office in November 2008, but the exercise just stopped.
The governor announced the commencement, with effect from the last Saturday of July, about two weeks ago, when he swore-in his Adviser on Environment.
Alhaji Simple Kanabe, who reacted to the announcement, said the governor was on the right track.
Kanabe, a former Chairman, Nigeria Union of Pensioners, Edo chapter, said restriction was needed to some extent to compel people to carry out the environmental cleaning.
He said that since it was going to be total restriction for four hours, people would definitely go a step further to de-silt the drains in front of their houses.
Kanabe said that the refuse generated from the exercise should be evacuated and disposed of timely.
Mr Johnson Efe, who lives on Adolor Road, Ugbowo in Benin also echoed Kanabe’s views on prompt evacuation.
He drew attention to the nuisance caused at the Uselu Market and other markets, on Mondays in Benin as a result of delay in refuse evacuation.
It would be recalled that a weekly environmental clean-up exercise was carried out in markets in Benin.
Efe said that the relevant government agencies should strictly enforce the restriction order on environmental exercise days.
