Rivers NUJ Happy Over Recognition Of Journalists
The Rivers State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has expressed joy over the recognition of contributions of journalists to development and peace building in Rivers State.
In a statement signed by the State NUJ Chairman and its Secretary Mr. Opaka Dokubo and Stanley Job Stanley, respectively the Union noted that the election of Mr. Ogbonna Nwuke as flag bearer of the PDP in the April elections into the National Assembly and the installation of Alabo Dagogo Clinton as a High Chief in Minama were nothing short of an endorsement of journalism as service organ in the country.
The union noted with pride that Mr. Ogbonna Nwuke discharged himself creditably both as Commissioner for Information, and Commerce and Industry in the state, while Alabo Clinton, who started his journalism career nearly 30 years ago, had served in various capacities, including Editor (Daily) of The Tide and Chairman Editorial Board of The Tide Group of Newspapers, among others.
Describing both men as accomplished journalists in the state; the union urged Mr. Nwuke and Alabo Clinton to continue to be bastions of the profession as well as mentor younger professionals with a view to entrenching responsible journalism in Rivers State.
The Rivers NUJ congratulated them but urged the government and society as a whole to continue to find a place of honour for the media and its practitioners with a view to encouraging them as journalism remains one of the most hazardous and thankless jobs the world over.
The NUJ was however happy with the Rivers State Government for honouring the media. The union recalled the appointment of a practicing journalist as Information Commissioner, which it asked for and plan to reconstruct the Union Secretariat in Moscow Road, Port Harcourt.
The union believed that the state government would take its relationship with the media to another level when it releases the official cars it promised directors in the state owned media houses during the First Information Summit in Nigeria hosted by the Rivers State Government.
