A’Ibom Executes N200bn Projects
The Akwa Ibom Government has spent N200 billion on the execution of projects in the Uyo Senatorial District between 2007 and 2010.
Governor Godswill Akpabio made the announcement on Wednesday in Uyo when the elders council in the senatorial district, led by its Chairman, retired Maj-Gen. Edet Akpan paid him a visit.
He explained that the decision to execute projects of such magnitude in the district was a deliberate effort to give Uyo township a facelift.
Akpabio said the projects included the construction of Tropicana Entertainment Centre, Ekritam-Ikot Oku Ikono Road, Uyo Urbanisation Scheme, flyovers, drains, Aka–Nung Udoe Road, e-library, banquet hall and township roads.
He said that he had also appointed two-third of his personal assistants as well as the Secretary to the State Government from the district.
The governor stressed the need for credible elections in the state in 2011, adding that “it is not just enough for the elders to advise, but they must also participate in the election processes”.
“I am a product of fair and free elections. I will make sure that fairness, equity and justice form the hallmark of the 2010 elections.”
“A situation where a child in Uyo Senatorial District will wait for 108 years before he tastes power is not good enough.”
“Peace, politically is not when there is no war, but when there is justice, equity and fairness among the people,” he added.
Akpabio dismissed allegations that he had endorsed the third-term ambition of Sen. Effiong Bob, Chairman, Senate Services Committee, representing the district.
In a position paper presented by the Secretary-General, Akparawa Godwin Ntukude, on behalf of the Uyo Senatorial District Elders Council, the people affirmed their rejection of Bob’s alleged third term ambition.
